I was born into tradition.
My grandparents were staunch Christians, the kind who built their lives on Scripture and Sunday ritual. From childhood I was taught to bow my head, dress neatly, and live within the lines. Church wasn’t just a place; it was a rhythm of life, a moral map I was expected to follow.
 

But our home also carried another heartbeat—the old ways. My grandparents and parents still believed in the power of ancestors. Sometimes they would burn incense and slaughter goats or chickens to appease them, blending prayers to Christ with offerings to the lineage. I grew up with Bible verses on the wall and ancestral smoke rising in the yard. I didn’t question it then; it was simply the air I breathed.

Yet even as a boy, something in me felt like it was waiting. When a small library was built in my community nearly two decades ago, I was the first young boy to walk through its doors. It became my secret sanctuary. I devoured books on everything I could reach—religion, history, science, philosophy, neuroscience, Eastern thought, the occult, even obscure spiritual texts no one around me had ever heard of. Each page cracked open a window in my mind, and the world I’d been handed started to feel smaller, thinner, less inevitable.

At first, I doubled down on faith by watching old sermons of Billy Graham, TD Jakes, Paul Crouch, Benny Hinn, Miles Monroe etc., thinking maybe I just needed to understand it better. I studied the Bible with different Christian sects like Jehovah’s Witnesses, Rastafarians, compared doctrines, chased interpretations, even devoured a lot of Mormonism texts.

But the more I read, the more I realized my devotion had been built on fear—fear of displeasing God, fear of losing blessings, fear of stepping outside the lines. It wasn’t reverence anymore. It was bargaining. And I couldn’t live like that.

Slowly, church became something I visited less, then not at all—especially when I had prayed so hard to be a professional soccer player but instead suffered a career-ending injury. Even the rituals to ancestors began to feel dogmatic rather than illuminating. The “right way” to live no longer felt right to me.
Somehow, I longed for something deeper.

Especially in my relationships. I hated how shallow modern dating felt—how much of it was performance, status, and empty gestures. I can still remember one cold night sitting alone in the library, thinking to myself, why do I have to seek knowledge this much?
